Vascular Anaesthesia
Vascular Anaesthesia
Anaesthesia for vascular surgery is as an 'optional' module in the Intermediate Curriculum, which is reflected by vascular-specific questions only appearing in two CRQ/SAQ papers since 2017.
Given the patient cohort and high-risk nature of vascular surgery, there's significant overlap with other perioperative areas such as smoking, hypertension , diabetes, anaemia, assessing functional capacity and management of major haemorrhage.
The main vascular topics are:
- Carotid Endarterectomy
- Aortic cross-clamp physiology
- AAA; pathophysiology
- AAA; open repair
- AAA; EVAR
- Ruptured AAA
- Thoracic aortic aneurysm repair
- Aortic dissection
- Lower limb revascularisation or amputation
NB Although thoracoscopic sympathectomy is listed under vascular anaesthesia in the Intermediate Curriculum, to me it makes greater sense to bunch it with the rest of the thoracic procedures
